If you are not a great connoisseur of mineralogy, you probably haven't heard of sodalite. However, according to the official classification, this mineral belongs to precious stones. The name of the mineral sodalite is associated with the composition of the mineral: sodium - in English means `sodium` The color of sodalite can be different. It depends on impurities and ranges from blue and greenish to red. White, gray and colorless specimens are found. There are translucent sodalites. Their color ranges from whitish and yellowish to greenish and blue. White veins of calcite are often visible on the surface of the stone. Blue opaque sodalites can be confused with azurite and lapis lazuli. Sodalite is usually found in the form of granular masses, transparent crystals are rare. Sodalite is very often passed off as lapis lazuli (both by design and ignorance), since it is cheaper. In beads and other inexpensive jewelry, slightly translucent sodalite is much more common than lapis lazuli. Unlike aboutt lazurite, the mineral sodalite does not contain sulfur ions and is found in the form of an array of intergrown crystals. Alomite is the trade name for blue sodalite. Sodalite has a more glassy luster and can be somewhat translucent compared to lapis lazuli (lapis lazuli does not show through at all).
