Prehnite is a mineral, aluminum and calcium silicate. It got its name in honor of the Danish captain Hendrik von Prehn (1733-1785), who first brought this mineral from the Cape of Good Hope.

Usually, prehnite occurs in the form of dense masses and kidney-shaped aggregates. Less common are aggregates of short-columnar crystals that can be cut. Translucent prehnite is considered a third-order gemstone and is not often used in jewelry. Sometimes prenite "cat eyes" are encountered.

Prehnite crystals are mined in the USA, Australia, China, Scotland, and southern Africa.

They counterfeit the mineral, presenting artfully crafted glass imitations as natural prehnite. The production of borosilicate "prenites" (and other stones with similar external characteristics) is especially widespread in India.

Faceted prehnites can be confused with chrysolite or chrysoprase.
