Diopside is a mineral of the feast oxenes subclass of chain silicates. Chemical composition of CaMgSi 2 O 6 . Color from white to green in various shades, usually dark green, gray-green, brown-green. It is rarely found in the form of transparent crystals and grains, more often it is translucent or translucent in thin edges. Line white, Hardness 5.5 - 6. The system is monoclinic. The origin is magmatic or contact-metamorphic, common in skarns. Some diopside show asterism.

Varieties:

  • Antochroite - light pink.
  • Baikalite - dark green or bluish green (Slyudyanka river).
  • Lavrovit - bright green.
  • Fiolan - purple or blue diopside (Altai, Sayan Mountains, Baikal region, Piedmont).
  • Chromium diopside is a transparent emerald-green variety, found in fairly large quantities in the form of veins and non-crystallized grains in the deposit. Inagli, Aldan, Yakutia (syn.: "Siberian emerald"). Transparent well-colored varieties are used as a cutting gemstone.
